Smarter Goal-Setting for a Successful New Year

As the new year begins, many of us are fired up to make positive changes, whether in our careers, personal lives, or well-being.

But how often do those ambitious resolutions fall flat before January even ends?

The problem isn’t your motivation—it’s the way we approach goal-setting.

For over 12 years, I’ve coached senior leaders and high-performing individuals, and one recurring theme stands out: the tendency to set overly ambitious goals that backfire.

Many people resolve to exercise four times a week for an hour each time, even if they’re starting from a place of minimal activity. When life inevitably throws a curveball and they miss one session, it can feel like failure.

The Smarter Alternative: Small, Achievable Goals

Instead of starting with a huge target, set smaller, more realistic goals based on your starting point.

For example, if you’re new to working out, aim for three 40-minute sessions a week instead of four hour-long ones.

Hitting this goal will give you a sense of achievement and momentum, creating an upward spiral of positivity.

Once you’ve established this habit, you can gradually increase the intensity or frequency of your workouts, stretching your goals without risking burnout.
