Connection: The Driver of Performance

Why Connection Matters

At the heart of what makes us human is connection.

We are social animals, hardwired to be part of a group. Our ancient ancestors didn’t survive by going it alone; they relied on their tribe for safety, security, and success.

While we might not be fending off saber-toothed tigers anymore, the need for human connection remains just as strong, especially in today’s fast-paced, digitally connected world.

Connection is a theme I speak about regularly (more info here) because it’s essential in both life and leadership. When we invest time in helping our team members understand their values and then share those values as a group, we foster connection, and that connection drives performance, boosts collaboration, and leads to a happier, more productive workplace.

Why Team Values Matter

Some might see happiness at work as a “nice to have,” but research consistently shows that happy teams perform better. When team members openly share their values, they build stronger connections with one another.

These connections help people understand each other’s behavior and motivations on a deeper level, which is key to building trust and collaboration.

Let me give you a couple of examples:

John has young children and elderly parents who need care. Family is one of his core values. When you understand this, it makes perfect sense why John leaves the office twice a week on time to visit his ailing mother. His actions align with his values.

Sally, on the other hand, values growth and career progression. She’s someone who sends you emails late at night because she’s deeply driven by her desire to improve and move forward. Knowing this about her helps you better understand her work ethic and behavior.

When we take the time to understand what makes our colleagues tick, we create a more empathetic workplace. And let’s face it, we naturally connect more with people who share our values.

So when you discover that a teammate shares your belief in family, faith, or integrity, you’ll feel more connected to them.

Connection Fuels Performance

Who are the people you most want to go the extra mile for? Chances are, it’s those you feel most connected to. This is why understanding and sharing values within a team can be so powerful. When team members feel that connection, they are more likely to help each other out and push toward a common goal.
